A charity road hockey tournament this month will feature a well-known former Toronto professional athlete.
The second annual CAAAR! 3 on 3 Road Hockey Tournament in support of the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation is scheduled for Sunday, June 12 at Burlington Mall, in the parking lot outside the former Target store.
Ex-Toronto Maple Leafs captain and former first overall NHL draft pick (1985) Wendel Clark is the 2016 CAAAR! Ambassador will be on site playing, signing autographs and posing for photos.
The tourney offers three levels— House League/Family (non-competitive), Select and Rep, the latter two being competitive.
Besides Clark, other current and former NHL players participating include Mike Johnson and locals Josh Jooris, Jordan Szwarz, Brett Flemming and Cory Conacher, plus Shane Conacher and Dino Felicetti, and Hamilton Bulldogs president Steve Staios and Bulldogs players Niki Petti, Matt Luff and MacKenzie Entwistle.
Teams consist of 8-10 players. Top fundraising teams have a chance to win prizes, including a private dinner with Clark.
There will be a Family Zone, live entertainment and food trucks.
In the first year of the road hockey tourney, in 2015, 22 teams and more than 200 players participated.
All money raised last year, more than $30,000, when to support Joseph Brant Hospital’s Critical Needs campaign.
The tourney registration fee is $25 per player. Families of four can register for the House League level for $75.
